Seville Consulting Wins Energy Efficiency Award
Seville Consulting is a silver winner of the 2009 EnergyValue Housing Award (EVHA) presented by the National Association of Home Builders. The EVHA award honors builders who voluntarily incorporate energy efficiency into all aspects of new home construction.
EVHA winners were selected from builders’ projects in three climate regions (cold, moderate, hot) and five categories (affordable, custom/demonstration, factory-built, multifamily, production). Seville Consulting received a silver award in the moderate climate, custom home categories.
Carl Seville, whose home and consulting office are in Decatur, is a green builder, educator and consultant on sustainability in the home building industry. Decatur Yoga & Pilates celebrates the holiday spirit all year by establishing ongoing “Terrific Thursdays” at their studio, 431 W. Ted’s Montana Grill has expanded its Real Deal menus to include lunch and dinner. The lunch menu, priced at $12-$13 per person, includes a choice of appetizer, entrée, and a sweet treat. The Real Deal dinner, $15-$16 per person, offers the same appetizer and dessert options as the lunch special but features two different entrée choices for dinner.

Salon Red received kudos and great praise from a Decatur resident who wrote in that she stumbled on a tiny ad for a free haircut at Salon Red for discouraged individuals who have recently lost their job(s). Sage on the Square, 121 Sycamore St., is under new ownership. Wayne Hamilton, chef/owner, invites the community to stop by and visit. Sage now offers Dine and Dance, an evening of dinner and dancing on the first Tuesday of each month. The restaurant is open 5:30-9:30 p.m. and there is room for dancing the entire evening. New Smoothie and Juice Bar Opens in Oakhurst
Nectar is now open at 707-C East Lake Dr., serving fresh raw juices, smoothies, handcrafted panini and gourmet ice cream, all prepared with fresh and premium ingredients.
Smoothies are made from fresh frozen fruit with no artificial flavors or colors. Mega smoothies are blends of exotic fruits.

Agnes Scott Alumna Endows College’s Public Health Program
Through a gift of $1.5 million, Agnes Scott College will expand and enhance one of the nation’s first undergraduate public health programs based at a liberal arts college. Funding for the program will be provided over the next six years by Pamela J. Bevier, a 1961 Agnes Scott graduate. She serves on Agnes Scott College’s Board of Trustees.
Bevier’s gift will support curriculum development in public health. It will also enable Agnes Scott to expand and enhance its Bevier Scholars program for student internships at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Last summer, six Agnes Scott students pursued research at the CDC as Bevier scholars.
2008 Graduate Named Agnes Scott’s First Sustainability Fellow
After earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology at Agnes Scott College, 2008 graduate Lies Van Bekkum returned to campus almost immediately as the college’s first sustainability fellow. She shares her role with Decatur where she works closely with the city’s new Environmental Sustainability Board.
In September 2007, Agnes Scott President Elizabeth Kiss signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, and college leaders have committed themselves to making Agnes Scott more sustainable. In September 2008, Agnes Scott met its first deadline by reporting its greenhouse gas emissions, creating an important benchmark. The college will develop and initiate a climate action plan this year.
Interstate Offers Free Recycling Services
Interstate Batteries reminds the community that residents can drop off used lead-acid (automotive) batteries at no charge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 252 S. Columbia Dr.
Located in Decatur for 10 years, Interstate Batteries is a warehouse distributor of automotive and other batteries primarily to automotive retailers in the metro area.
Distributor Mike Dozier says the company is committed to the recycling process. Since 1952, recycling batteries has been a key part of the services Interstate Batteries offers. Last year Interstate returned more than a billion pounds of lead-acid batteries to government-regulated smelters across the United States for recycling.
Dr. Melissa Finke Joins Village Vets
Dr. Melissa Finke has joined the team at the Village Vets of Decatur. Raised in Long Island, New York, she has a Bachelor’s degree (1995) and a DVM (1999) from the University of Georgia. She previously worked at a veterinary practice in Woodstock for six years.
The Village Vets shares its home with the Animal Emergency Center of Decatur at 217 N. McDonough St. The practice offers services that include preventative health care, dental care, surgery, boarding and grooming. Sycamore Place Gallery Offers Art Camps
Register Now for Miss Sylvia’s Summer Art Camps at Sycamore Place Gallery, 120 Sycamore Place. Full-day, half-day and extended-day camps are offered. Students draw, paint, collage, sculpt, make clay creations, climb the magnolias and eat at Fellini’s. Please wear old clothes.
Morning Camps are 9 a.m.-noon for ages 3-10 years. Afternoon camps are 1-4 p.m. for ages 3-10 years and 11-14-years. Cost is $95 for three days, $125 for five days each week. Extended lunch noon-1 p.m. at Fellini’s is extra.
