Terrific Thursdays in Decatur –
Increasing Holiday Customer Turnout
Nov. 2, 9, 16, 30 and Dec. 7, 14, 21, 2006

Remember to make Decatur your shopping and dining “mallternative” this holiday shopping season. You’ll find cool deals at more than 125 unique shops and restaurants, from the west end of Ponce to the east, along Church Street and College Avenue, downtown and in Oakhurst village. And in November and December, participating businesses will again make Thursdays terrific, with extended hours, beverages, snacks and special offers.

Participating shops and restaurants stay open until at least 9 p.m. on Thursdays in November (except Thanksgiving) and December and offer a variety of specials, open houses, discounts and refreshments to appeal to holiday shoppers. The extended hours allow more time for folks to shop after work and to come from other areas of metro Atlanta.

Renewal Renovates Cemetery Gazebo
In September, Renewal Construction, Inc., a Decatur-based company, volunteered to renovate the historic wellhouse gazebo in Decatur Cemetery. Donating all services at no charge, Renewal completed the work in time for the fall Garden Tour, which featured the cemetery.

The gazebo, built in the 1880s, is located near the Commerce Drive entrance. The structure was last renovated in 1999. Since then, time and weather have taken their toll. Renewal CEO Peter Michelson decided to make the gazebo the company’s service project for 2006. Michelson enlisted the help of Jeremy Rhett, owner of Decatur-based CertaPro Painters, to donate expert pressure washing and painting of the structure.

Renewal Construction, Inc., 124 S. Columbia Dr., is a full-service general contractor offering turnkey solutions – from concept to move-in – for small projects, major renovations and new construction. For information, call 404-378-6962 or visit www.RenewalConstruction.cm. CertaPro offers full service painting services. For information, visit www.gocerta.com.

Season of Giving: Make Someone Happy!
Every year hundreds of low-income children and senior citizens look to A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur for jackets, clothing, toys and other items. Each child or senior in the program receives approximately $100 worth of gifts.

A specific “wish list” for a child or senior citizen can be sent to you. You may either purchase the gifts yourself or make a financial contribution and we will do the shopping for you. Donations may be made to A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur, P.O. Box 220, Decatur, GA 30031.

Weekday volunteer opportunities are available, to call back donors and to mail them information. Times are flexible. There are also opportunities to volunteer in the distribution center when donated items are received at the beginning of December.

MLK Service Project Needs YOU
On Jan. 13, 14, 15, 2007, the 5th annual Martin Luther King Jr. service project will assist more than a dozen senior homeowners in Decatur with home repairs and yard work. There are many ways to help. You or your organization can “adopt” a home, contributing toward the building supplies and/or professional services needed to make it safer and more livable. Your business organization may also wish to contribute professional services or supplies, or provide a group of volunteers to work together on a home.

Some houses require work that must be completed by a licensed tradesperson, such as installation of heating, electrical repairs, and plumbing. If you are a plumber, carpenter, electrician, HVAC technician, roofer, or other skilled tradesperson, please consider donating your services to this project.

Decatur’s Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project is a collaboration of the Decatur Preservation Alliance, Decatur Housing Authority, Decatur Business Association, Community Center of South Decatur, and South Decatur Community Development Corporation. For information on sponsoring a home, contact Kimberly Fulghum, Decatur Preservation Alliance, 404-371-4444, or Kimberly@decaturpreservationalliance.org. To sign up to volunteer at the event, contact Lee Ann Harvey, Volunteer! Decatur, 678-553-6548, or laharvey@decaturga.com.
