Terrific Thursdays in Decatur –
Increasing Holiday Customer Turnout
Nov. 2, 9, 16, 30 and Dec. 7, 14, 21, 2006
Attention merchants in the City of Decatur! You are invited to participate in the Terrific Thursdays 2006 promotion to increase the turnout of shoppers and diners in Decatur during the holiday season. The annual event – now in its 6th year – is open to all shops and restaurants in downtown Decatur and Oakhurst.
Participating shops and restaurants stay open until at least 9 p.m. on Thursdays in November (except Thanksgiving) and December and offer a variety of specials, open houses, discounts and refreshments to appeal to holiday shoppers. The extended hours allow more time for folks to shop after work and to come from other areas of metro Atlanta.

’Tis the Season of Giving in Decatur
A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur is now receiving applications to assist our city’s low-income children and senior citizens. Last December, the community’s generosity allowed this program to provide holiday gifts for more than 400 children and senior citizens.
You can participate individually or as a group with friends, neighbors, family, place of worship, workplace, school, or club. We provide a profile for shopping that lists exact information on what a child or senior needs, including clothing sizes. We ask that you purchase approximately $100 worth of gifts for each person (a mixture of toys and clothing for the children).
Ways to help:
• Have a party and ask each person to bring one of the items on your list.
• Take up a collection and designate one person to do the shopping.
• Make a financial contribution and we will do the shopping for you.
• Volunteer!
We need weekday volunteers to call back donors and mail them information. Times are flexible. Volunteers also help in the distribution center in December. Call 404-378-8068 or email aseasonofgiving@decaturga.com. Make donations to A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur, P.O. Box 220, Decatur, GA 30031.
Fall Electronics
Recycling Day
Saturday, Oct. 21
Decatur will hold its Fall Electronics Recycling Day on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Decatur High School parking lot. Electronics dropped off that day will be sorted and broken down into their raw materials and sent to recyclers for reuse, thus saving valuable landfill space.
Updates for this year include:
• Batteries of any type
• Mercury thermometers and thermostats
• Print cartridges
• Televisions – no longer accepted.
Last year 530 cars drove through the DHS parking lot and the two successful events garnered 62,000 pounds of electronics equipment.
Fall Electronics Day is sponsored by the City of Decatur, Decatur High School, Atlanta Recycling Solutions, Batteries Plus, Cartridge World, the Waste Management Advisory Board and Dreamsan.
